This quote is looking at the more "noble" side of pride, by which I mean the good or respected side. What I believe that Nancy Lopez is trying to bring forth in one's head is the idea that if someone is proud enough, they will try the hardest the conceivably can to (in the instance of is quote) win. What this is saying is that a competitor will, as I have said, find a way to win, whereas a "Quitter" will attempt to find any possible way to stop trying which, in Nancy Lopez's words, means that they are lacking in pride...
