Song: Big Iron

In this song, an Arizona ranger is sent to fin an outlaw by the name of "Texas Red". This outlaw has already killed twenty people, and shown with the twenty notches on his pistol, and Texas Red is certain that the twenty first notch will be the unnamed Arizona ranger. Texas red is incredibly sure of his abilities, so sure that he in fact does not consider the idea of failure at the hands of the ranger.  The Ranger, someone who is presumably trained to use a weapon, never expresses any sort of arrogance.

Although Texas Red believes himself capable of defeating the ranger, he fails, as the ranger was much faster than him. What this reveals about too much pride is that those who hold themselves in too high esteem will always end up failing, no matter how long they have been successful. If this outlaw had considered the fact that he could fail (and loose the arrogance), he could have lived. As it is put in the song, "he might have went on living, but he made one fatal slip when he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip"
